Today, I’m in Nikko.
It’s raining pretty hard.
The house I own here is quite old. The gutters have seen better days, and some of the joints may already be cracking apart.
I’m going to take a proper look at them today.
Inspecting gutters in the rain.
In a way, it’s perfect gutter weather.
The garden is doing its own wild thing
There’s something else on my mind: the garden.
It’s summer, which means—
the weeds are far too energetic.
They keep growing whether I do anything or not. I wish I could put that life force to work somewhere else.
Lately I’ve been wondering whether, instead of making the whole garden neat and tidy, I could place natural stones around it and grow plants and vegetables between them:
“Dry landscape garden × botanical garden × kitchen garden.”
Not an overly perfect Japanese garden. A little strange. A little wild. But somehow calming.
That’s the kind of garden I want.
Meanwhile, AI is working in my head
While thinking about all this, I’ve also spent the last few days experimenting with AI.
What fascinates me now is that AI is changing from something that “answers questions” into something that
actually does the work.
There are tools like Codex that work inside your home computer, and apparently Grok has something similar.
So I started wondering:
Could I turn my home PC into a tiny AI company?
I could divide jobs among different AIs, and separate the materials each one is allowed—or not allowed—to see.
There still aren’t any human employees, but the list of AI employee candidates keeps growing.
An old house and the newest AI
It’s a strange combination when you think about it.
In front of me: an old Showa-era house soaked in rain. Damaged gutters. Rampant weeds. Big stones in the garden.
In my head: AI agents, automation, and how to divide work among them.
I’m repairing a Showa house while imagining a company of the future.
Maybe this is exactly the sort of thing I like.
Repairing old things. Growing plants. Making things. Using AI. Studying what I don’t understand. Trying things anyway.
They all look unrelated, but I have a feeling they’ll connect somewhere down the road.
Still making clumsy progress today
First, I’ll find out where the rain is dripping from and take a proper look at the gutters.
I’ll look at the garden. The stones. The weeds.
And I’ll probably talk with AI again.
The company, the garden, and the old house are nowhere near their final form.
But—
it may be more interesting when you still can’t see the finished shape.
On a rainy day in Nikko, I’m still making clumsy progress.
